Flex Gym opened the doors for its first members, on Sept. 1, 1994 at 5:30 a.m. With 5500 square feet of floor space, our goal was to furnish the Tidewater area with a well equipped, well staffed workout facility, where safety, efficiency and proper lifting techniques were stressed.
Flex Gym was the first facility in Tidewater to introduce Hammer Strength equipment to its members. Our expansive free weight area was built around Hammer Strength and it quickly attracted the area’s athletes, body builders, power lifters and anyone who wanted results. Flex Gym is the home to six Miss Virginia Beauty Pageant winners, national caliber power lifters and body builders, two IFBB pros, numerous professional NFL players (most recently Percy Harvin of the Minnesota Vikings) and hundreds of local residents who just want to be healthier and more fit.
In 1998 our gym expanded to its current 8500 square foot size. Founders Al Walke and Bonnie Berg are passionate about the fitness business and it shows. Flex Gym is a one of a kind gym – the last of the old “black iron gyms” where free weights dominate, efforts are valued and fashion clothes are not an issue.

Precor cardiovascular equipment, Hammer Strength, Icarian, Nebula and Atlantis weight equipment, 2 squat/deadlift platforms, 20,000 lbs of Olympic plates, dumbbells, up to 170 lbs, friendly and knowledgeable members and staff – the list could go on and on.
